Simple Isn't Always Neat & Orderly
I set an intention at the beginning of this year to travel more. I’m grateful to be living out this intention pretty well so far this year. I’ve visited 23 states to date and I have a couple more on the list before year’s end.My travels were by car, plane and RV, each of which came with different packing restrictions. And fitting your stuff into a confined space can get frustrating…Google “simple suitcase packing tips” and you’ll get approximately 529,000 results suggesting how to solve this frustration. I’m sure some of these are great, like The Minimalists video, and I’m sure others leave something to be desired. You can feel free to peruse them yourself, but if you’re short on time, you might want to follow my tip. It’s the method I used after spending four days with approximately 600 professional organizers at the National Association of Professional Organizers conference in Arizona.I took everything I had (clothes, papers, books, folders, fabric storage bins, shoes, makeup bag and more), shoved it into the main section of the suitcase and I zipped it up. There was no folding of the clothes, stacking of the papers or arranging of the bulky items. It was done in seconds and it felt wonderful!I wish I had a picture to share, but I was so relaxed and present in the moment, that I didn’t even think about pulling out my phone to take a photo.Maybe my method came as a result of spending the previous 96 hours watching, listening to and dreaming about all things organizing. Or maybe it was the fact that I was so tired from being on the go every waking moment. Whatever the cause, it wasn’t neat and it wasn’t orderly, but it was simple and it worked for me.So next time you’re thinking about simplifying something, don’t get stuck on the idea that it has to be neat and orderly. Anything that is intentional, done with ease, keeps you relaxed and present and works for you is simple. What simple thing have you done that’s not neat and orderly? And by the way, never underestimate the power of intention! What would you like to do? Set that intention and pursue it!Blessings,Lisa
