How to Simplify Items in Great Condition But Never Used…
When I’m working with clients to simplify their things, I frequently hear one statement, “These are still in great condition, but I never use them…” Have you encountered this on your journey?Contrary to what you might think, these are some of the best words that you can utter when evaluating your things. Why? Because you’re acknowledging two critical facts. The first is that you know the items are in great condition-they are still working, they are usable and they might even still be in the original box!And second, you have honestly stated that you do not use the items. Before emotions come into play in the decision-making process, you’ve stated two strong factual statements. (Often they’re said with great confidence.)After pointing these facts out to my clients, we discuss how these items can have new life beyond their home. We talk about the people and organizations that would be grateful to receive them. We envision each item being received by someone who is grateful to have it.Like the animal shelter staff members (and pets) that are thrilled to receive the extra blankets that were buried at the bottom of the linen closet for years. Or the disadvantaged women who are making their way back into the workforce and are thankful to receive hardly worn business clothing. Or the soup kitchen workers that receive a like new toaster and still-in-the-box vegetable steamer.Once it’s clear how the client’s excess can fulfill someone else’s need, the decision to let them go is easy. When you begin to think bigger, beyond your own personal world, you begin allowing simplicity into your life and you allow your items to bring simple joys to others.I’d love to hear what you have that is “in great condition, but never used.” And I’d love to hear where you feel these items can have a life beyond your home. Send me a note and share! To Simplicity & Joy,Lisa
